The objective of this study was to evaluate nurses' knowledge, attitudes, and use of research in a large nonacademic health system prior to and following a 6-month intervention.
Many organizations have begun to implement a variety of research-oriented activities to build interest in and support of nursing research.
Nurses were surveyed to measure attitudes, knowledge, and behaviors related to nursing research and familiarity with available resources. Barriers to conducting research were identified.
Nurses with a baccalaureate degree or higher reported a greater degree of support and knowledge and higher level of familiarity with resources than did diploma/associate degree nurses.
Outcomes suggest that implementation of the components of a typical nursing research program may help to improve nurses' attitudes and knowledge of research. Affecting behaviors requires a more targeted approach.
