The significance of carotid bruits for the occurrence of stroke in patients with elevated blood pressure was studied. Stenotic changes in the neck segments of the carotid arteries were confirmed by Doppler angiosonographic method. Of 110 hypertensive patients with audible carotid bruits, 47% had evidently pathological angiosonographic finding. Twelve percent of these patients suffered stroke within the next two years. Doppler angiosonography has an important role in detecting and following the occlusive disease of the carotid arteries, particularly in the prevention of stroke in hypertensive patients with carotid bruits.
