The effects of cranberry juice on serum glucose, apoB, apoA-I, Lp(a), and Paraoxonase-1 activity in type 2 diabetic male patients.

Abstract

BACKGROUND

Type 2 diabetic patients are faced with a higher risk of dyslipidemia and cardiovascular disorders. This study was undertaken to assess the effect of consumption of 1 cup cranberry juice by type 2 diabetic patients on serum paraoxonase-1 (PON-1) activity, apoA-1, apoB, glucose, and Lp(a).

METHODS

In a double-blind randomized clinical trial, 58 type 2 diabetic male patients were randomly divided to receive 1 cup cranberry juice (CJ) or placebo drink daily for 12 weeks. Fasting blood were obtained at beginning and at the end of study (12(th) week). Serum glucose and PON-1 activity were measured by enzymatic and colorimetric methods, respectively. ApoB, apoA-I, and Lp(a) were determined immunoturbidimetrically. The data were analyzed by SPSS version 16.

RESULTS

There were significant decrease in serum glucose and apoB (P>0.05 and P>0.01, respectively) and significant increase in serum apoA-1 and PON-1 activity (P>0.05 and P<0.01, respectively) at the end of study in CJ group compared with control group. In CJ group at the end of study, there were significant decrease in serum glucose and apoB (P<0.01 and P<0.01, respectively) and significant increase in serum apo A-1 and PON-1 activity (P<0.01 and P<0.01, respectively) compared with initial values. In CJ group, there was no significant change in Lp(a) at the end of study compared with initial values and also compared with control group.

CONCLUSION

1 cup CJ for 12 weeks is effective in reducing serum glucose and apoB and increasing apoA-1 and PON-1 activity, so may have favorite effects on reducing CVD risk factors in type 2 diabetic male patients.

背景

2型糖尿病患者面临血脂异常和心血管疾病的更高风险。本研究旨在评估2型糖尿病患者饮用1杯蔓越莓汁对血清对氧磷酶-1(PON-1)活性、载脂蛋白A-1、载脂蛋白B、血糖和脂蛋白(a)的影响。

方法

在一项双盲随机临床试验中,58名2型糖尿病男性患者被随机分为两组,每天分别饮用1杯蔓越莓汁(CJ)或安慰剂饮料,持续12周。在研究开始时和结束时(第12周)采集空腹血样。血清葡萄糖和PON-1活性分别采用酶法和比色法测定。载脂蛋白B、载脂蛋白A-I和脂蛋白(a)采用免疫比浊法测定。数据采用SPSS 16版进行分析。

结果

与对照组相比,CJ组在研究结束时血清葡萄糖和载脂蛋白B显著降低(分别为P>0.05和P>0.01),血清载脂蛋白A-1和PON-1活性显著升高(分别为P>0.05和P<0.01)。在CJ组研究结束时,与初始值相比,血清葡萄糖和载脂蛋白B显著降低(分别为P<0.01和P<0.01),血清载脂蛋白A-1和PON-1活性显著升高(分别为P<0.01和P<0.01)。在CJ组,研究结束时脂蛋白(a)与初始值相比以及与对照组相比均无显著变化。

结论

连续12周每天饮用1杯CJ可有效降低血清葡萄糖和载脂蛋白B,提高载脂蛋白A-1和PON-1活性,因此可能对降低2型糖尿病男性患者的心血管疾病风险因素有有益作用。
