Scalp hair has been successfully used in forensic medicine, screening populations for heavy metal poisoning, and for monitoring environmental pollutants. However, its use for the diagnosis of the individual for disease or nutritional status has been questionable. This is primarily due to the large individual differences associated with age, sex, race, hair color, hair treatment, and environmental exposure.
