A survey by questionnaire was conducted among 81 mothers at the time of the systematic 3 years check-up of their children in order to search for possible relationships between maternal social loneliness during the perinatal period (pregnancy and first year) and child's dysharmonious development. A dysharmonious development was observed in 30 of the 81 children. There was no strong evidence for a relationship between maternal social loneliness and the child's dysharmonious development. However, there was a greater number of mothers without social activity among the group of children with dysharmonious development coupled with a more frequent maternal complaint of a feeling lonely. The social loneliness of the mothers is increasing in industrial society and further studies on its consequences on child's development are needed.
