Informed consent is not a new principle in the patient--physician relationship. It emphasizes the basic principle of the patient's autonomy and the respect which is due to him/her. In oncology it covers clinical examination, complementary investigations, different treatments and follow-up. Obtaining the necessary information may be complicated by difficulties concerning the patient, the cancers and the physicians. The problematical aspects can be alleviated if the patient's autonomy is acknowledged and respected and if the physician succeeds in establishing a sound personal relationship with the patient.
