Abstract
Twenty three unselected cases of optic neuritis were re-examined between 2 and 18 years after the onset of the disease, with a mean of 9.7 years. Only 8/23 (35%) had unilateral non-recurrent disease. One patient only (4.3%) went on to develop multiple sclerosis. These findings support the impression that demyelinating disease varies considerably in Latin America compared with northern industrialised countries.

23例未经挑选的视神经炎患者在发病2至18年后接受了复查，平均病程为9.7年。23例中仅8例（35%）为单侧非复发性疾病。只有1例患者（4.3%）后来发展为多发性硬化症。这些发现支持了这样一种观点，即与北方工业化国家相比，拉丁美洲的脱髓鞘疾病差异很大。
