On the basis of a case study, it is shown that traditional approaches to understanding what have been labeled compulsive neuroses are insufficient if the illness is based on a prestructural disturbance. Classical treatment techniques are contraindicated in such a case, and analytical approach oriented toward a response to the structure of the ego is appropriate in its place.
