The intestinal immune system performs a tightrope walk between anti-pathogen immunity and tolerance to innocuous luminal antigens. In this issue of Immunity, Kim et al. (2018) demonstrate that the microbiota is driving tolerance to food antigens and dampening inflammatory responses through CXCR1 mononuclear phagocytes.
