Abstract

BACKGROUND

Comprehensive misunderstanding about medicine usage is often associated with high treatment risks which have led to unexpected and adverse effects or even death. Many researches assessing health literacy have been undertaken, but only in adults. This study was undertaken to evaluate the level of understanding in students of medical terms and its correlation with gender, grade and parental occupation.

METHODS

A cross-sectional study was conducted from September to October 2017 with 594 students (28.6% of men and 71.4% of women) of Hanoi University of Pharmacy from freshman to fifth-year students chosen randomly. The knowledge of pharmacy students was assessed by a questionnaire including 25 medical terms. Descriptive statistics and Chi-square test were used with p < 0.05 as level of statistical significance.

RESULTS

The level of understanding of students was high with most of medical terms reaching over 70% correct answers. A positive significant association between health literacy and education was found with higher knowledge demonstrated in upper years, while there was no difference among students with and without parents belonging to the medical field. Regarding the relation with gender, there was no significant correlation for most medical terms.

CONCLUSIONS

Levels of understanding of medical terms in pharmacy students was high, presenting a significant association with education. This study should be extended in order to assess the level of health literacy in various populations, thereby indirect evaluating implementation of medical preventive programs.

背景

对药物使用的全面误解往往伴随着高治疗风险,这可能导致意外和不良影响甚至死亡。许多评估健康素养的研究已经开展,但仅针对成年人。本研究旨在评估药学专业学生对医学术语的理解水平及其与性别、年级和父母职业的相关性。

方法

于2017年9月至10月进行了一项横断面研究,从河内药科大学随机选取了594名学生(男生占28.6%,女生占71.4%),涵盖大一至五年级学生。通过包含25个医学术语的问卷对药学专业学生的知识进行评估。使用描述性统计和卡方检验,以p < 0.05作为统计学显著性水平。

结果

学生的理解水平较高,大多数医学术语的正确答案率超过70%。发现健康素养与教育之间存在显著正相关,高年级学生表现出更高的知识水平,而父母属于医疗领域和不属于医疗领域的学生之间没有差异。关于与性别的关系,大多数医学术语没有显著相关性。

结论

药学专业学生对医学术语的理解水平较高,与教育存在显著关联。本研究应加以扩展,以评估不同人群的健康素养水平,从而间接评估医疗预防项目的实施情况。
