The operation of enzyme electrode glucose sensors based on oxygen, hydrogen peroxide, and electron carrier molecules is reviewed. Issues that are most effectively addressed by in vitro experimentation are identified. An understanding of these issues is prerequisite for unequivocal interpretation of in vivo results.
