A standardized methodology was used to study the in vitro behavior of different strains of Neisseria gonorrhoeae when treated with povidone-iodine. The bactericidal activity of the antiseptic was appraised using the dilution-neutralization technique on four gonococcal strains, two of which produced a beta-lactamase. Bactericidal activity in aqueous medium was observed down to a dilution of 1/128. This result specifies the conditions under which this antiseptic is active against Neisseria gonorrhoeae.
