Levels of some hormones and their contribution to coronary heart disease (CHD) were examined in a representative (1470-strong) sample of a population of 20- to 69-year-old males. Blood follicle-stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone levels were shown to increase with age, while the level of somatotrophic hormone remained unchanged, that of testosterone declined, while insulin and estradiol were also on the increase. Disorders of hormonal control contributed essentially to CHD. It is demonstrated that hormonal disturbances may enhance the effects of other coronary risk factors.
