Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW
The objective of this article is to critically review the rationale for the changes in the staging of the oral cavity cancers.
RECENT FINDINGS
After reviewing many recent studies about oral cancer and analyzing multi-institutional data for outcomes, the staging system was updated to include new knowledge of the disease and its biological behavior.
SUMMARY
This article reviews the changes in the staging of oral cavity cancers published in the 8th edition of the AJCC/UICC TNM cancer staging manual and discusses future directions.
