During the past 10 years, the field of sexually transmitted diseases has evolved from one emphasizing the traditional venereal diseases of gonorrhea and syphilis, to one concerned with the syndromes associated with Chlamydia trachomatis, herpes simplex virus, and human papillomavirus, and then to one preoccupied with the fatal systemic infections caused by human immunodeficiency virus.
