Inconsistencies in the common usage of the words "accident" and "injury" are examined. The practical difficulties in applying some commonly accepted definitions are illustrated. It is shown how common notions of "accident" are not supported by the facts and are counter-productive to preventive measures. It is argued that the phrase "injury control" provides a more comprehensive perspective of the problem than the phrase "accident prevention", but its use also has disadvantages. It is concluded that health professionals should discontinue using the term "accident" and associated phrases, when referring to unintentional injury events.
对“事故”和“伤害”这两个词常见用法中的不一致之处进行了审视。阐述了应用一些普遍接受的定义时所面临的实际困难。表明了“事故”的常见概念并无事实依据,且对预防措施起反作用。有人认为,“伤害控制”这一表述比“事故预防”能提供更全面的问题视角,但使用它也有弊端。得出的结论是,健康专业人员在提及意外伤害事件时,应停止使用“事故”一词及相关表述。
