Abstract

Staff nurse retention is becoming an increasingly important topic for nurse managers at all levels. Client acuity is increasing, qualified staff are becoming more scarce, and practicing nurses are often frustrated by nonresponsive organizations. Research which tested contingency theory shows that specific organizational designs, when combined with certain dimensions of nursing technology, increase staff nurse retention. This author discusses contingency theory's implications for organizational effectiveness.
