The role of oropharyngeal stimulation (in the form of chewing) on the frequency of ruminating by institutionalized mentally retarded persons was examined. Chewing before meals reduced the rate of postmeal ruminating. Several procedures that might produce clinically significant decreases in ruminating were suggested.
