Adequate supply of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFAs) is of great importance for neonates, especially preterm infants. In particular, -3 LCPUFAs and -6 LCPUFAs play a key role in brain development, immune regulation, and disease prevention. Lack of LCPUFAs may lead to neurodevelopmental impairment, affect the development of neonatal immune system, and result in neonatal diseases. This article reviews related research advances in the physiological function of LCPUFAs and its effect on neonates, so as to provide reference for clinical application.
