As an ethical principle, showing respect for human dignity is a professional duty of all nurses. The aggressive nature of severe burn injuries makes it hard to respect the existential values and dignity of burn patients. However, only a few studies have been conducted on the preservation of the dignity of burn patients. The purpose of this study is to identify and describe burn patients' dignity as perceived by nurses, family caregivers, and burn patients.
The present study has a descriptive, qualitative research design. Nurses, family caregivers and patients in the biggest burns hospital in the south of Iran were selected via purposeful sampling from October 2017 to August 2018 (n = 25). Data were collected using semi-structured, in-depth, individual interviews. Thereafter, data analysis was performed through conventional content analysis.
Three main themes were extracted from the information obtained in the interviews: empathic communication, showing respect, and providing comprehensive support.
The care provided to burn patients should be combined with effective communication, spending time with them, and attending to their repetitive requests, so that they can freely express their feelings and concerns. In addition, the patients' human values and beliefs should be respected and all aspects of their existence should be taken into account to preserve their dignity. Workshops designed based on the findings of the present study can help with improving the quality of burn nursing care.
作为一项伦理原则，尊重人的尊严是所有护士的职业责任。严重烧伤的侵袭性使得尊重烧伤患者的生存价值和尊严变得困难。然而，关于维护烧伤患者尊严的研究却很少。本研究的目的是识别和描述护士、家庭照顾者以及烧伤患者所感知到的烧伤患者的尊严。
本研究采用描述性定性研究设计。2017年10月至2018年8月，通过目的抽样法从伊朗南部最大的烧伤医院选取护士、家庭照顾者和患者（n = 25）。采用半结构化、深入的个人访谈收集数据。之后，通过传统内容分析法进行数据分析。
从访谈中获得的信息提取出三个主要主题：共情沟通、表示尊重和提供全面支持。
对烧伤患者的护理应与有效的沟通、陪伴他们以及关注他们的反复诉求相结合，以便他们能够自由表达自己的感受和担忧。此外，应尊重患者的人文价值观和信仰，并考虑其生存的各个方面以维护其尊严。基于本研究结果设计的工作坊有助于提高烧伤护理质量。
