The Regional Drug and Poison Information Centre at Addington Hospital, Durban, received a total of 3,177 requests for information on poisoning during 1985, with the highest incidence in August. The most common substances involved were prescribed medicines (895 calls, 28%) and household products (708 calls, 22%). The most frequent enquirers were hospital doctors (1,468 calls, 46%).
