The validity and reliability of the Borg 6-20 rating of perceived exertion (RPE) scale has not been tested among Chinese people from Mainland China. The purpose of this study was to test: 1) The validity of Leung Chinese version and Wang Chinese version of the Borg 6-20 RPE scale; 2) The reliability of Wang Chinese version RPE scale; and 3) The agreement of these two Chinese versions of the RPE scale among young healthy adults from Mainland China.
A total of 26 subjects (11 males, 15 females; age 22.7 ± 3.0 yrs) volunteered to participate. They performed one ( = 3), two ( = 14), or three trials ( = 9) of the Bruce treadmill protocol test within 9.0 ± 5.1 days (validation trials), and 30.4 ± 27.9 days (reliability trials). Power output, heart rate, oxygen consumption, and RPE were recorded.
RPE was significantly correlated with power output (Leung version ≥ 0.75, Wang version ≥ 0.73), heart rate (HR) (Leung version ≥ 0.84, Wang version ≥ 0.87), and oxygen consumption (VO) (Leung version ≥ 0.80, Wang version ≥ 0.81) (all < 0.01). The overall test-retest interclass correlation was 0.94 ( < 0.01). No significant differences in correlations (RPE against power output, HR and VO) between trials existed for the reliability tests of Wang version scale. No significant differences in correlations (RPE against power output, HR and VO) between the two Chinese versions of RPE scale existed.
Both Chinese RPE scales are valid among young healthy Chinese mandarin speaking adults. The Wang scale is reliable, and the Leung and Wang scales show superior agreement with each other.
Borg 6-20自觉用力程度(RPE)量表在中国大陆人群中的有效性和可靠性尚未得到检验。本研究的目的是检验:1)梁氏中文版和王氏中文版Borg 6-20 RPE量表的有效性;2)王氏中文版RPE量表的可靠性;3)这两个中文版RPE量表在中国大陆年轻健康成年人中的一致性。
共有26名受试者(11名男性,15名女性;年龄22.7±3.0岁)自愿参与。他们在9.0±5.1天内(验证试验)和30.4±27.9天内(可靠性试验)进行了1次(n = 3)、2次(n = 14)或3次(n = 9)布鲁斯跑步机方案测试。记录功率输出、心率、耗氧量和RPE。
