Diabetic auditory neuropathy (DAN) is a common complication of diabetes that seriously affects the quality of life in patients. In this study, we investigate the role of folic acid in the treatment of DAN in an experimental rat model.
Thirty-two Sprague-Dawley rats were equally divided into four groups: group 1, normal; group 2, diabetic rats; and groups 3 and 4, diabetic rats treated with folic acid (40 and 80 mg/kg, respectively). We used some tools to investigate the therapeutic effect of folic acid on DAN. We evaluated auditory brain stem response (ABR), estimated the volume and number of spiral ganglion and the volume of stria vascularis and spiral ligament by the stereological method, and measured the blood levels of homocysteine (HCY), malondialdehyde (MDA), and superoxide dismutase (SOD).
Our study showed that folic acid treatment was not significantly effective in improving structural and functional disorders in DAN, even though its effectiveness in reducing HCY ( < 0.001) and MDA ( < 0.05) as oxidative biomarkers was significant.
Folic acid is not effective in relieving morphological and functional disorders in DAN.
糖尿病性听觉神经病(DAN)是糖尿病常见的并发症,严重影响患者的生活质量。在本研究中,我们在实验大鼠模型中探究叶酸在DAN治疗中的作用。
将32只Sprague-Dawley大鼠平均分为四组:第1组,正常组;第2组,糖尿病大鼠组;第3组和第4组,分别用叶酸(40和80mg/kg)治疗的糖尿病大鼠组。我们使用一些工具来研究叶酸对DAN的治疗效果。我们评估了听性脑干反应(ABR),通过体视学方法估计螺旋神经节的体积和数量以及血管纹和螺旋韧带的体积,并测量了血液中同型半胱氨酸(HCY)、丙二醛(MDA)和超氧化物歧化酶(SOD)的水平。
我们的研究表明,叶酸治疗对改善DAN的结构和功能障碍效果不显著,尽管其在降低作为氧化生物标志物的HCY(<0.001)和MDA(<0.05)方面效果显著。
