Defined as three hours of crying per day occurring more than three days in any one week, colic affects 10 to 20 percent of infants during the first three to four months of life. Food allergy, parental attitude, flatulence, maternal medication and parental smoking have been implicated. Dietary modification, pharmacotherapy and increased physical contact with the infant have been useful. Normal growth and development are not affected.
