Abstract

In recent years, there has been increasing recognition of mental health concerns in academia, with stress, burnout, anxiety, and depression being reported among faculty members. The demanding work environment, the need to balance personal and professional duties, and the constant pressure of productivity while navigating multiple tasks of teaching, research, mentorship, professional development, and service all impact the mental health and overall well-being of faculty. Higher education institutions have structurally changed as has the research landscape. These changes as well as faculty-specific and student-specific factors coupled to the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic have led to profound effects on the mental health of academics. This paper is a narrative review of the pertinent literature describing faculty mental health and well-being. It summarizes the available evidence on factors influencing faculty mental health and shows the prevalence of anxiety, depression, stress, and burnout among faculty from various academic fields and along the whole academic ladder. Using a suggested framework that collates the efforts of leaders and faculty, the paper concludes by exploring strategies that promote work-life balance among academics and suggesting effective interventions to improve their mental health outcomes.

近年来,学术界对心理健康问题的认识不断提高,有报道称教职员工中存在压力、职业倦怠、焦虑和抑郁等情况。苛刻的工作环境、平衡个人与工作职责的需求,以及在承担教学、研究、指导、职业发展和服务等多项任务时持续的产出压力,都会影响教职员工的心理健康和整体幸福感。高等教育机构在结构上发生了变化,研究格局也是如此。这些变化,以及与教师和学生相关的特定因素,再加上新冠疫情的影响,都对学者的心理健康产生了深远影响。本文是一篇叙述性综述,回顾了描述教职员工心理健康和幸福感的相关文献。它总结了影响教职员工心理健康因素的现有证据,并展示了不同学术领域和整个学术梯队中教职员工焦虑、抑郁、压力和职业倦怠的普遍程度。本文采用一个整合了领导和教职员工努力的建议框架,通过探索促进学者工作与生活平衡的策略并提出有效的干预措施以改善他们的心理健康状况来得出结论。
