The mission of all institutes under Chinese Academy of Sciences focuses on frontier science and applied technology to address the challenges for country's development and world sustainable development. Here, I summarize the founding and development of Tianjin Institute of Industrial Biotechnology of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), originated from Institute of Microbiology of CAS. The journey reflects the advances of industrial biotechnology in China. By considering the relationships among science, technology and engineering, I propose that scientists involved in basic research should develop a logical thinking of "idea-hypothesis-experiment-concept-paper-technology- sample-product-commercial goods", from which great solutions that tackle real problems can be developed. This is the logic from basic research to applied science.
中国科学院下属各研究所的使命聚焦于前沿科学和应用技术,以应对国家发展和世界可持续发展面临的挑战。在此,我总结了中国科学院天津工业生物技术研究所(以下简称“天津工业生物所”)的创建与发展历程,该所起源于中国科学院微生物研究所。这段历程反映了中国工业生物技术的进步。通过思考科学、技术与工程之间的关系,我建议从事基础研究的科学家应培养一种“想法—假设—实验—概念—论文—技术—样品—产品—商品”的逻辑思维,从中可以开发出解决实际问题的优秀方案。这就是从基础研究到应用科学的逻辑。
