On the basis of interview data (n = 20) reasons given by 60-75 year-olds for physical inactivity are analysed. 6 specific motives are pointed out which can be summarized in two motive classes: an inefficient expense-effect relation and low importance of physical activity. The results show that older persons are not motivated for physical activity if sport-related motives are completely missing or if uncontrollable barriers impede sport-related motives.
