The antibacterial activity of gentamicin against 10 isolates of E. coli and 10 of P. aeruginosa was investigated in pooled human urine, with or without the addition of 20 g % dextrose, at pH 6. Mean values for T50 under the influence of 50 mg/ml gentamicin were 3 +/- 0.23 h vs 1.86 +/- 0.10 h and 3.5 +/- 0.08 h vs 1.56 +/- 0.13 h with an osmolality of 1200 mosm/l and 820 mosm/l respectively.
