Although childhood idiopathic epilepsy syndromes are frequently associated with a good prognosis, they also have a high prevalence of comorbid attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The current study aimed to examine whether an intervention using electroencephalogram (EEG) biofeedback can improve cognitive performance in childhood idiopathic syndromes with ADHD.
In this study, thirty-six childhood idiopathic epilepsy syndrome patients with comorbid ADHD were divided into either the treatment or the control group. All participants' cognitive functions were assessed by a standardized test battery on processing speed, spatial perception, arithmetic, semantic comprehension, forward/backward verbal working memory, non-verbal matrix reasoning, visual attention and executive function before and after the training.
ANOVA analysis showed that the treatment group improved significantly on task performances in forward digit span and backward digit span tasks, but not in other cognitive assessments. The findings indicated that the treatment group receiving the EEG-Biofeedback intervention showed improved verbal working memory.
The findings suggested that EEG biofeedback can improve the core cognitive function in childhood idiopathic epilepsy syndromes with ADHD.

在本研究中,36名患有共患ADHD的儿童特发性癫痫综合征患者被分为治疗组或对照组。在训练前后,通过标准化测试组合对所有参与者的认知功能进行评估,测试内容包括处理速度、空间感知、算术、语义理解、正向/反向言语工作记忆、非言语矩阵推理、视觉注意力和执行功能。
方差分析表明,治疗组在正向数字广度和反向数字广度任务的任务表现上有显著改善,但在其他认知评估中没有改善。研究结果表明,接受EEG生物反馈干预的治疗组言语工作记忆有所改善。
研究结果表明,EEG生物反馈可以改善患有ADHD的儿童特发性癫痫综合征的核心认知功能。
