This study compared the clinicopathological, immunohistochemical characteristics and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) detection of Burkitt's lymphoma (BL) in the abdomen and jaw of Iraqi patients.
A cohort/retrospective study was carried out between August and September 2024 using 25 tissue blocks (14 gnathic and 11 abdominal BL) from the Oral and Maxillofacial Laboratory, University of Baghdad, College of Dentistry, and the National Centre for Educational Laboratories. The sections were stained with haematoxylin and eosin (H&E), while CD10, CD20, Bcl-2, BCl-6, C-Myc and Ki-67 markers were used for diagnosis. The DNA detection of the EBV was performed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR).
The tumours showed 22 classical and 3 atypical histological patterns. The mean age of the patients was 6.3 years, and the male-to-female ratio was 3.1:1. The younger patients were affected by the gnathic BL (0.01), and the EBV was detected with a positive correlation (0.005) in 14% of the gnathic and 72% of the abdominal tumours. There was no significant correlation between the Ki-67 expression and the clinicopathological features.
A critical finding of this study was that gnathic BL tends to affect people of a younger age. In addition, the abdominal presentation of EBV suggests a regional pattern of viral exposure, while there was no correlation between the aggressiveness of BL and viral exposure or the tumour site.
本研究比较了伊拉克患者腹部和颌部伯基特淋巴瘤（BL）的临床病理、免疫组化特征及爱泼斯坦-巴尔病毒（EBV）检测情况。
2024年8月至9月进行了一项队列/回顾性研究，使用了来自巴格达大学牙科学院口腔颌面实验室和国家教育实验室中心的25个组织块（14个颌部BL和11个腹部BL）。切片用苏木精和伊红（H&E）染色，同时使用CD10、CD20、Bcl-2、BCl-6、C-Myc和Ki-67标记物进行诊断。通过聚合酶链反应（PCR）进行EBV的DNA检测。
肿瘤呈现22种经典和3种非典型组织学模式。患者的平均年龄为6.3岁，男女比例为3.1:1。较年轻的患者受颌部BL影响（0.01），在14%的颌部肿瘤和72%的腹部肿瘤中检测到EBV呈正相关（0.005）。Ki-67表达与临床病理特征之间无显著相关性。
本研究的一个关键发现是颌部BL倾向于影响较年轻的人群。此外，EBV在腹部的表现提示病毒暴露存在区域模式，而BL的侵袭性与病毒暴露或肿瘤部位之间无相关性。
