Abstract

OBJECTIVE

Gastrointestinal cancer is one of the most common causes of death worldwide. As there are no clinical symptoms at the beginning of the disease, the diagnosis can be delayed and the stage increased. Timely diagnosis is therefore crucial. Since one of the factors involved in cell division is phosphate, and considering the benefits of using saliva, this study investigated the phosphate concentration in saliva and serum in patients with gastric and colorectal cancer as well as in healthy patients.

METHODS

26 patients with gastric and colorectal cancer confirmed by pathologic criteria were admitted to the oncology department of Imam Reza Hospital, and 30 healthy individuals participated in this study. Saliva and serum samples were collected in the morning. Phosphate concentration was determined using a photometric method.

RESULTS

The average phosphate content in serum as well as in stimulated and unstimulated saliva was significantly lower in the patient group. In addition, the results showed that the patients reported more dry mouth than the control group despite increased salivary flow.

CONCLUSION

It appears that patients with malignant diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, such as colorectal cancer and gastric cancer, have lower serum and salivary phosphate levels than healthy individuals.

目的

胃肠道癌是全球最常见的死亡原因之一。由于疾病初期没有临床症状,诊断可能会延迟且分期会增加。因此,及时诊断至关重要。鉴于细胞分裂涉及的因素之一是磷酸盐,并且考虑到使用唾液的益处,本研究调查了胃癌和结直肠癌患者以及健康患者唾液和血清中的磷酸盐浓度。

方法

26例经病理标准确诊的胃癌和结直肠癌患者入住伊玛目礼萨医院肿瘤科,30名健康个体参与本研究。早晨采集唾液和血清样本。使用光度法测定磷酸盐浓度。

结果

患者组血清以及刺激和未刺激唾液中的平均磷酸盐含量显著较低。此外,结果显示尽管唾液流量增加,但患者报告口干的情况比对照组更多。

结论

似乎患有胃肠道恶性疾病(如结直肠癌和胃癌)的患者血清和唾液中的磷酸盐水平低于健康个体。
