Effective management of abscess in primary teeth is crucial in pediatric dentistry due to its significant impact on both immediate and long-term oral health of children. Treating deep carious primary molars poses challenges due to their unique morphology and the difficulty in achieving a hermetic seal, further complicated by the lack of apical closure following physiological root resorption. In search of better treatment modalities that enhance healing rates, reduce treatment times, and improve patient comfort, the present study aimed to compare the healing ability of Pulpotec, abscess remedy, and triple antibiotic paste (TAP) in necrotic primary molars through an evaluation.
A total of 60 patients aged 4-10 years were enrolled and randomly assigned to three groups: Pulpotec, TAP, and abscess remedy. After access opening and canal cleaning with a 20 K-file, the respective medicament was placed on the pulpal floor, and the cavities were restored with glass ionomer cement (GIC). Clinical and radiographic evaluations were conducted at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months.
Done using the Chi-squared test.
Clinical success rates were 90% for both TAP and Pulpotec, and 80% for abscess remedy after 12 months. Radiographic assessment showed reduced radiolucency of 90, 75, and 65%, respectively.
All three medicaments demonstrated effectiveness as alternatives to conventional endodontic treatments for necrotic primary molars. Among them, TAP showed the highest efficacy.
This study supports the adoption of alternative medicaments in pediatric dental practice, potentially leading to improved management strategies for managing abscesses in primary teeth and contributing to better long-term oral health for children.
