Abstract

WRINKLED1 (WRI1) is a transcription factor (TF) of the APETALA2 (AP2) family, which regulates oil synthesis in plants. Dunaliella parva is a microalga, which attracts widespread attention due to its strong resistance to unfavorable environments and simple cultivation conditions. In our earlier study, DpWRI1-like was identified but the role of WRI1 for oil accumulation remains unclear in D. parva. Therefore, in this study, the effects of DpWRI1-like overexpression on D. parva were evaluated. Overexpressing DpWRI1-like could greatly increase the amount of oil while decreasing the amount of starch in transgenic D. parva. In addition, mRNA levels of many genes (ACC, GPAT and DGAT) related to fatty acid synthesis/triacylglycerol (TAG) synthesis increased in transgenic D. parva. In conclusion, the DpWRI1-like protein could convert carbon flow to the biosynthesis of fatty acids and triacylglycerol (TAG).
