Abstract

INTRODUCTION

Menstrual disorders and infertility are among the most common physical and psychological stressors affecting women of reproductive age. In this study, we aimed to determine the prevalence of hypothyroidism among polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) patients diagnosed based on the Rotterdam criteria.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A cross-sectional study was conducted among 139 cases of diagnosed PCOS at a tertiary care center in Jharkhand, India, from October 2019 to May 2021. Patients attending the Outpatient Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and diagnosed with PCOS by radiology experts via ultrasound were enrolled in the study. Diagnosis of PCOS was confirmed by the Rotterdam criteria for PCOS.

RESULTS

Out of 139 participants, 29 (20.87%) had thyroid-stimulating hormone levels of >5 μIU/mL, and 110 (79.13%) had thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels of <5 μIU/mL, resulting in a hypothyroidism prevalence of 20.87%. Body mass index (BMI), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), total testosterone, serum luteinizing hormone, and thyroid-stimulating hormone levels were higher among PCOS patients than the reference values.

CONCLUSION

As hypothyroidism is linked to reproductive hormone imbalances, and its symptoms often overlap with PCOS, assessing thyroid function alongside reproductive hormone profiles can improve understanding and management of PCOS.

引言

材料与方法

2019年10月至2021年5月,在印度贾坎德邦的一家三级医疗中心对139例确诊的PCOS患者进行了一项横断面研究。纳入研究的患者为在妇产科门诊就诊且经放射科专家通过超声诊断为PCOS的患者。PCOS的诊断依据鹿特丹PCOS标准确定。

结果

139名参与者中,29名(20.87%)促甲状腺激素水平>5 μIU/mL,110名(79.13%)促甲状腺激素(TSH)水平<5 μIU/mL,甲状腺功能减退症患病率为20.87%。PCOS患者的体重指数(BMI)、腰臀比(WHR)、总睾酮、血清促黄体生成素和促甲状腺激素水平高于参考值。

结论

由于甲状腺功能减退症与生殖激素失衡有关,且其症状常与PCOS重叠,因此在评估生殖激素谱的同时评估甲状腺功能可改善对PCOS的理解和管理。
