Human peripheral lymphocytes stimulated with phytohaemagglutinin (PHA) produce a factor with chemotactic activity for homologous monocytes. The production of this factor and lymphocyte transformation was investigated in patients with Hodgkin's disease. It has been found that the PHA response as measured by incorporation of [H]thymidine was markedly depressed in patients when compared to the response of normal lymphocytes. In contrast, the production of the chemotactic factor was not significantly depressed in patients with Hodgkin's disease.
