Escherichia coli RNA polymerase exists in two different forms, one less active than the other under standard assay conditions. Conversion of the active to the inactive form requires ATP-Mg(++). The reverse, inactive to active enzyme conversion, requires Mg(++). Covalently bound adenylic acid residue(s) are contained in the inactive form.
