Vervet monkey disease has been successfully transmitted to hamsters but only after at least 9 consecutive hamster passages following initial inoculation of monkey material previously passages 9 times in guinea-pigs and 3 times in monkeys. A uniformly fatal illness was produced in suckling hamsters at the 9th passage level. The disease in hamsters can be distinguished from that produced in guinea-pigs and monkeys in that it produces signs of encephalitis and the brain contains high levels of the infective agent.
