The incidence of mammary carcinoma in Austria remains constant. Follow-up examinations of 6000 cancer patients, representing approximately one-third of all patients operated on during the period 1960 to 1974, show that the proportion of early stages is relatively low. This is evidenced by a five-year survival rate above and a ten-year survival rate below average. The operative procedure was almost exclusively the Rotter-Halsted operation; during the last few years, the modified radical mastectomy was preferred. Results of partial resections, performed in once center only, were unsatisfactory.
