Hepatocellular carcinoma is the most common malignant tumour in Senegal, the incidence being estimated at 22.3 per 100 000 among men and 8.3 per 100 000 among women. This estimate was made on the basis of a series of 228 cases registered between 1969 and 1971 at the Pathological Anatomy Laboratories in Dakar. The ethnic distribution of these cases indicates a clear predominance among Sudano-Sahelian groups (Wolofs and Sérers) in comparison with groups of mixed race (Peulhs) or of Berber origin (Moors). This difference holds true even when the different ethnic groups live in the same region, as in the valley of the Senegal River. An epidemiological study indicates a hepatitis viral etiology. The prevention of hepatitis B is described and the results given of a vaccination programme in Senegal.
