Different opinions exist about the nature of the material in eosinophilic bodies, or "keratin pools", in the epithelium of the human oral mucosa. The material has been described as keratin-like and as a filtrate from the blood vessels. In the rat forestomach eosinophilic bodies develop in the hyperplastic squamous epithelium following administration of a chemical carcinogen. In the present study this model is used for immunohistochemical studies of eosinophilic bodies. They are shown to contain fibrinogen and immunoglobulin and thus seem to develop as a result of pooling of plasma exudate in the epithelium.
