Thin-section electron microscopy of several herpetovirus strains recovered in the laboratory from human hosts and rodents visualized typical spherical particles when the strains were propagated in vitro at a temperature corresponding to the body temperature of their natural host. In contrast, viral growth at a suboptimal temperature often resulted in aberrant viral structures.
