Recurrent abdominal pain in the child is a common and difficult problem for practitioners. To resolve whether its origin is organic or psychogenic takes time and patience. Investigation is made more difficult by the fact that parents and doctors are happier if the pain has an organic basis; in the great majority of children it is caused by stress.
