Lymphocytes which specifically bind lens crystallins have been found in the spleens of Lewis rats. These animals have not had lens injuries nor have they been previously sensitized to lens proteins. Nylon wool filtration which removes B cells also removes the lens protein binding lymphocytes. The application of these observations to the pathogenesis of phacoanaphylactic endophthalmitis is discussed.
