Phenytoin has traditionally been used for both prophylaxis and acute treatment of alcohol withdrawal seizures. With the exception of a well defined subgroup of withdrawing patients, this may not be appropriate. Chronic anticonvulsant therapy is not indicated without evidence of another underlying seizure diathesis.
