Ultrasonic Nebulizers show a variation of aerosol density during the breathing cycle that affects deposition. First there is a relatively dense fraction of aerosol that penetrates deeply into the lung, while the subsequently delivered aerosol reaches only the upper parts of the airways. Calculations show that the effect has a pronounced influence on deposition. The percentage of medicament deposited in the lower airways is significantly increased, although the total amount of medicament is lower than with an aerosol of uniform density.
