The effectiveness of corrective measures in controlling occupational cancer has been related to present knowledge on proportion of cancer due to occupational exposure. The epidemiological background of such an estimate is analyzed with particular emphasis on the limits of the method. Different types of approach in cancer prevention and control in the industrial environment and their scientific background are reviewed. Some recent examples of the application of corrective measures in industries, which in the past presented a carcinogenic risk, are analyzed. The need for a multidisciplinary approach is emphasized.
