Hypertension is an extremely common disorder. Approximately half the population over the age of 45 have a blood pressure over 160 systolic and 95 diastolic. In Albury, Prineas and colleagues found that 12.5% of the population had a diastolic blood pressure over 110 mm Hg, hence they have severe hypertension.
