The author describes the principal diseases of animals occurring in sub-Saharan Africa, and the traditional procedures used to prevent and treat these diseases, particularly those employed by Fulani shepherds. First, consideration is given to the diseases of infectious, traumatic or nutritional origin which may affect various species of animals. Next, accounts are presented of diseases principally affecting young and adult cattle, small ruminants and other domestic animals (horses, dromedaries, poultry, etc.). Finally, a general review is given of the traditional pharmacopoeia of the Fulani people, summarising their knowledge of toxic and medicinal plants.
