Many teenage girls have already made a decision on their choice of infant feeding, influenced more by social attitudes and family than by knowledge of its benefits, writes Maureen Purtell. Her study of schoolgirls' views raises important questions about how health professionals can promote awareness of breastfeeding among this age group in order to increase the numbers of babies at birth to meet the Health of the Nation target.
