Numerous psychological factors are involved in converting from psychotherapy to psychoanalysis with the same analyst. The process of making the recommendation and working through reactions to it, both before and after the analysis begins, requires heightened attention to the ensuing transference and countertransference reactions. After reviewing the literature on this area, the author highlights the main factors in this process and presents an illustrative case example.
